personal declaration of radical responsibility

November 2, 2012 by rachel

for everything now fallen away i bear responsibility for every delicious return to the table of earthly delights every soul-numbing morsel of dispossession inhaled, imbibed, every dark and slithery corner into which i stumbled and every moonlit mesa i traveled in the company of the all-knowing sky, i tell you now that i held the key, i turned the lock, and this I lay at the feet of no one save myself if I was led astray by so-called inner […]

oh, the places we’re going!

October 8, 2012 by rachel

Yes, I’m talking about the Words Divinely Wrought Global Poetry-Share… …and Yes, I’m talking about each of us who has chosen the oft-arduous, frequently frustrating path of awakening/ascension during this pivotal time in the evolution of humanity. First, poetry. I offered up the invitation for Words Divinely Wrought participants in this post on August 5. Since then, 20 people have joined our adventure and poems have been placed in Colorado, Pennsylvania, New York, California, Oregon, and Virginia in the US; […]

back in the usa, a poem in a bottle takes to the sea

October 1, 2012 by rachel

When Julie M told me she wanted to put a poem in a bottle and toss it into the Pacific Ocean, I never doubted that she would do exactly that. And, of course, she has: “I finally made it and had a glorious upgrade of body and soul via the inimitable Oregon coast. I have attached some pictures to accompany anything you may wish to post… “The original ‘message in a bottle’ idea seemed wholly appropriate based on the energies […]

September 30, 2012 by rachel

I can scarcely express what a thrill it is to receive and post updates from the stouthearted souls gently placing Words Divinely Wrought poetry in intriguing spots around the globe. It is not overstatement to say that these moments often comprise the best part of my day. They allow me to deeply center myself in the palpable connectedness we all share beyond so-called barriers of time and space. I breathe in every picture and every word and I am born […]

at notre dame cathedral in paris, a poem quietly sits and waits

September 28, 2012 by rachel

“At last a poem has found a place in Paris!” So writes Christine Whitelaw of New South Wales, Australia, who has now stamped Notre Dame Cathedral in her Words Divinely Wrought Poetry Passport. Once again, the featured poem is Prayer for Inclusion. Christine writes, ” I walked with the usual crowd into the cathedral this afternoon, shuffling along …. until we reached my favourite part. …. a statue of Mary and Child that always has a wonderful vase of white […]

on this day of balanced grace, poetry updates from nyc and lima (espanol)

September 22, 2012 by rachel

Although Equinoxes (Autumnal or Vernal) are days of balance, they can also bring a bit of wobbliness. Think of a tightrope walker in those moments before or after that perfectly executed step. Balance is not bestowed as much as it is earned. So, if you or someone you know is wobbling right now, take heart and drink up these Words Divinely Wrought global poetry updates. Even though we have not yet received a poignant or lovely note from someone who […]

ode to political buffoonery: third time the charm for satire afire?

September 18, 2012 by rachel

For a change of pace, rhyming political satire. Originally posted here (twice!) in 2011. This, too, my friends, is the journey of human evolution. When speaking in verse of the human condition Must one always rely on high-toned erudition? For truly, are we not mere clowns playing life In rapture phonetic laced with angst, grief and strife? Wherein lies the humor, the repartee comic? She pines to stand tall midst the ethos ironic A pratfall, fair guffaws, a pie in […]

September 11, 2012 by rachel

I’ve heard through the grapevine that it can be overwhelming to navigate the Words Divinely Wrought archives if you’ve just stepped off the boat, so to speak. In an attempt to address that, I have created a more concise story about the origin and intent of our Global Poetry-Share project, along with a standing invitation for new participants to join in. Twenty individuals have joined our global poetry-share community so far, and only one of them is a male. That’s why I was particularly delighted to receive an update from Doug in Ontario. His blog, Valley Road Rambler, carries the subhead, “life, love, loss, and a whole lotta soul,” and I guarantee you his truth in advertising is impeccable. Here’s a synopsis; you can read his entire Words Divinely Wrought story right over here. “Mine was one of the first packages […]

In August, German-born, English-passported, self-identified new Peruvian gringa and poem faery Rose Mary Boehm sent me this message:  “I received your URL from a friend in London. September 4, 2012 by rachel

If you have been following the unfolding of our global poetry-share, you may recall SS of Brooklyn, who was the “woman eating lunch” at the Battery Park Labyrinth when the very first copies of poetry were placed in Manhattan back in July. Here she is now, with an update on her own poetry planting… “…Yesterday I placed ‘Arouse From Your Slumber’ on the pedestrian overpass I walk over at least twice daily to get to and from the subway. August 31, 2012 by rachel

The Words Divinely Wrought adventure continues in Amsterdam, where Simonetta went above and beyond — planting You Are The Prayer in the crook of a voluptuous willow tree, returning later to find the poem drifting in a nearby pond, and finally earthing it at the base of the tree. “I ventured in Vondelpark the other day as soon as the sun decided to come back and offer us the illusion of yet another summer day,” writes Simonetta. “…I decided to […]

JP of the UK has struck again! Here’s her communique from last week: “Today I went into Oxford to meet my son for lunch. He teaches English to foreign students. I told him and his colleague about WDW and asked them if they had any suggestions for a venue. from peru and italy (via the netherlands), poetry of the heart transcends language

August 25, 2012 by rachel

Words Divinely Wrought is becoming truly global. At the core of our Words Divinely Wrought Global Poetry-Share is the desire to bring inspired words to those who yearn to hear them. Naturally, that means going beyond English — the language in which the poems were written. In a recent Comment, RB in Peru reports that she has translated poems into Spanish and they are now in a final proofreading phase. When ready, they will be “released” in Lima. And here […]

August 18, 2012 by rachel

When JM of Oregon commented here that she had received her Words Divinely Wrought packet, she waxed poetic (ahem) about the white envelope, the contents therein, and her excitement as she and the poems wait for just the right moment to head out into the world. Today, more inspiration  from the gently expanding “Words Divinely Wrought” community of poetry-sharers. I continue to be bowled over by the hearts who have found their way here, and assure you that every word, every comment, touches me deeply. I have been somewhat solitary for a long time, and, like others here, this undertaking (funny that word is usually associated with death) is connecting me with people who instantly feel like family. And for that, I am grateful. If this […]

August 9, 2012 by rachel

If this Words Divinely Wrought initiative had a soundtrack, it would reverberate with the mellifluous sounds of hearts cracking and opening around the planet. My favorite Kiwi and I were brainstorming the concept not so very long ago, and we were both very clear that, first and foremost, this really isn’t about poetry. It’s about allowing yourself to be part of something large, trusting the astonishing efficiency of the Universe, chipping away at boundaries or walls that may have kept […]

This painting is "Women Sowing Seeds" by an unknown Bengali artist. I found it on Kamat's Potpourri, a personal website of all things India, described by the family that runs the website as "There's no Bollywood, no politics, no cricket (well, we have a picture), no Taj Mahal, no weather, no stocks. Just the studies of two students of life." The website reports that an American journalist once declared Kamat's Potpourri as "India's most low-tech site." Not until 2006 did the webmasters begin using a computer to to type and scan in the countless pictures.

The energy started moving quickly yesterday after I posted the details of the (ahem) Global Poetry Party of the Heart. triple play: poetry for the slightly dry and disheartened

July 18, 2011 by rachel

Many of us seem to be baking; considering whether we might fry an egg on the soles of our upturned feet. Here, a triad of poems, connected by their seeming ability to quench, to splash, to sprinkle a bit of moisture on whatever slightly disheartening notions might be visiting you in the heat of the day or the heat of the night. satire afire: ode to political buffoonery (redux)

July 14, 2011 by rachel

Hey, it’s summer, the traditional season for reruns. Given the shenanigans now unfolding in the hallowed halls of American government and around the world, I couldn’t resist bringing out this piece of mine from January 2011. Lest you believe this is off-topic for this blog, remember that all forms of human evolution require that the old ways prove themselves irrelevant so that the new can be born. Well, this is an interesting one — and a bit of a tongue-twister, to boot. Perhaps I am reconnecting with my troubadour self, and socio-political commentary is my next area of exploration. these words will not wait til i am gone

December 18, 2010 by rachel

As befits the days and nights leading up to Winter Solstice (not to mention the approaching Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse), I have turned inward to explore new directions my creativity may take as the new year draws near. Clarity seemed elusive — until this piece of poetry made itself heard and my Aha! moment surfaced. if i am indeed a one-note author, hear me sing my song of gratitude

September 28, 2010 by rachel

This morning, I’ve been revisiting and releasing once and for all a brief interaction I had with a NYC literary agent back around 2002. It wasn’t a cold call; I had been referred by the third editor I had been shuffled to after my publisher went through one, two, oh, let’s say three mergers/buyouts that pushed me increasingly down and away from the individuals who had initially connected with my material. As she requested, I sent the agent a package […]

August 1, 2010 by rachel

I can scarcely tell you where I’ve traveled The maps have yet to be drawn Terrain emerges from heights and depths in every moment, Uncharted landscapes arise with the sun. I know only that I wandered among the dunes Weighed down by ancient sacks stuffed full of recrimination Earthen pots brimmed with incomplete assumptions Sacred oils nested deep within the skins of alabaster jars. I turned down dusty highways ringed by sage and supposition Met my own gaze behind bovine […]

Now is the time to say Enough! to the marginalization of all who walk the path of beauty and art To the unyielding duress of seeking to balance deep and soulful expression with the strictures of daily existence, Enough! don’t words deserve to have a life, too?

May 19, 2010 by rachel

I’ve been following conversations about blogging, writing, and the writing of blogs. Absent minor modifications, this post originally ran in May 2008 under the title, “the secret life of words revealed,” and offers a perspective not often heard. Enjoy this while I percolate with another, related post more specifically attuned to writers who blog (and bloggers who write). As someone who has always danced with words, I frequently face this conundrum (BTW, one of the greatest words ever, no? ). […]

perhaps you channeled this poem through me?

May 16, 2010 by rachel

My favorite writing is that which bubbles up (or down?) out of some unknown wellspring — perhaps the collective unconscious that Carl Jung spoke of. How else do I explain this bit of poetry that spilled out of me as I sat in the sunshine watching rabbits cavort in my yard in the landlocked American Southwest? For a short time, I felt myself at sea, perhaps in the British Isles or along the Ivory Coast in days gone by — […]

blogging makes me want to be a better human being

May 12, 2010 by rachel

I never imagined I would be blogging about blogging. My intention has never been to learn the intricacies of Search Engine Optimization, to tweet or twit or flik or collect thousands of virtual friends. I never had any desire to enter into excessively redundant and ultimately unresolved global blusterings regarding politics, celebrity sexual indiscretions, or other fleeting topics du jour — although I admit I have been known to venture into the sidebar of Huffington Post to ogle what our […]

“…in defiance of self- consciousness…big, bold, and outright.”

"(Rachel) practices a doctrine of fearlessness. A self-taught poet, she is mesmerized by the way words seem to take on a life of their own (and) ...she strives to “be the instrument” for expression. Her willingness to acknowledge and to submit to the power of language comes across in the litany-like form of her long, intentionally inspirational poems, in the way she returns to such phrases as “Forgive me” (“Prayer for Radical Forgiveness”), “It’s that easy,” or “I will” (“Vow for the Unbound”). Written in defiance of self-consciousness, Snyder’s prayerful poems were big, bold, and outright. " Anne Lovering Rounds for Bryant Park Blog
